Lost or Found Cats

Have you lost or found a cat?  While the Venice Cat Coalition (VCC) is not an official clearinghouse for such information, we will help you if we can.

You should first report the lost or found pet to all of the following organizations:
  • Sarasota County Animal Services: 941-861-9500
  • St. Francis Animal Rescue: 941 492-6200
  • Suncoast Humane Society: 941-474-7884
We highly recommend the Missing Pet Partnership: www.missingpetpartnership.org

They are an all-volunteer, national, non-profit organization that works to reunite lost pets with their families through education and partnerships with animal welfare agencies.  The website has lots of helpful information and advice.  Their  Lost Pet Assistance phone line is:  253-529-3999

You can also register at this national website:  www.thecenterforlostpets.com

The Center for Lost Pets is there for one purpose - to help get lost pets back home... safe, sound, and soon.  You can search to see if your lost pet has been found, or if the pet you have found has been posted as lost, and they provide the best possible lost and found pet advice.

If you have lost a cat our advice is to keep looking for at least 3-4 months.
One way to lure a cat back home is to scatter its litter box contents around the perimeter of your yard. Cats have a very strong sense of smell and this can help them find the direction home.
We also recommend the use of a trap outside your home as the cat is often nearby and is likely to try and get back in. Traps can be borrowed from local cat rescue organizations.

Please microchip your pets now, so there will be a good chance that you will get a phone call if your pet is ever lost and then found. Your vet can do this for you, or we at VCC and do this for a small fee.
VCC and other shelters scan all found cats to see if a chip has been implanted.
We usually find a cat with a microchip and an owner about once every four months, so we know it works!
